“Play is the beginning of knowledge.” -George Dorsey
Your little one is mouthing a toy, looking at their hand, smelling new foods, and smiling at you. They are learning about their world, gaining social, cognitive and physical skills. Our Tummy Time and Developmental Play class is for 0-12 month babies, we will teach parents and caregivers how to play and interact with their little one whether they are on their tummy, laying on you, or sitting up. Let’s discuss how to get the most out of this important time together.
Babies learn about the world through their five senses. Objects and activities that involve each of the five senses help build:
- Physical strength—coordination, grasping, balance, neck strength
- Social skills—atonement, back-and-forth communication, taking turns
- Security—attachment with caregiver, problem solving and self-soothing tools
- Intellect—language acquisition, vocabulary building, cause and effect, imagination
During circle, you’ll learn specific skills such as how to be “present” and “ in the moment” to increase your baby’s opportunities for learning and observation and how to narrate baby’s play in order to build their language skills. You’ll be provided with dozens of simple, informative activities you can use in class and take home with you. There will be opportunities for individual play, parent-child time, and parallel play with other babies. Parents and caregivers will also have the opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance from Nahal Papehn M.A., CCC-SLP, a pediatric speech and language pathologist, children’s play and book enthusiast and fellow mom.
